In 2018, Western Australian Labour Premier Mark McGowan introduced a landmark Aboriginal Procurement policy. The objective of the policy was to improve outcomes for Aboriginal businesses in the state with targeted measures to increase contract awards.
From policy implementation through to the end of 2020, 533 contracts have been awarded, equalling more than $379 million of value for Aboriginal businesses.
This month, the policy has been expanded to further leverage the success of the initial program.
Key to the expansion includes an increase in contract award targets to Aboriginal businesses to 4% by 2023-24.
